Supporting Local Breweries and Farms
Captain Lawrence’s “Beer From Here” meets some produce, also from here.
Fresh veggies have been lacking in our diet recently. The ResourcED Vegetable Box from Stone Barns, about 10 minutes from our apartment, solved that problem. While I wish there was more in terms of quantity, the quality can’t be denied. Fresh salad greens, broccoli rabe and ramps are rounded out with some onions, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, carrots and apples. Perfect complements to a steady diet of mac and cheese, chili and Cheetos.
Bring on the Craft Beer
Captain Lawrence’s pilot system, under the steady hand of McLain Cheney, provides spent grain to Stone Barns as livestock feed. An offshoot of that partnership comes in the form of fresh hops every Fall for brewing. Those “wet” hops join malt produced from Stone Barns grains and morphs into “Beer From Here,” a hyper local saison.
While I wasn’t able to get my hands on last year’s batch, I did have one can from the previous year rolling around the back of the fridge. Age undoubtedly hurt it, but its essence remained intact. Hints of hay, lemon zest and spices still peeked through in the aroma. Biscuity malts provided a base for a ton of yeast characteristics; clove, white pepper, funk and (sadly) a little bit of a medicinal quality. Hoping it happens again this year.
