Captain Lawrence Brewing's 'Citra Dreams'

Captain Lawrence Brewing’s ‘Citra Dreams’ meets prog metal.

I was introduced to metal in college.  Not your typical Megadeth or Iron Maiden; stuff that was a bit more obscure.  My never-roommate but best friend, also named Chris, fed me a steady diet of bands like Helloween, Kamelot, Dream Theater, Rhapsody and Savatage.  Power, progressive and symphonic metal comprised a major part of our soundtrack for four years.

After college, I wandered more into the progressive realm of things.  Think Rush or Genesis, but on steroids.  Pretty technical, odd harmonies, intense rhythms, lots of syncopation.  If you’ve ever listened to Tool, you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about.  Kinda jarring, but if you love it, you love it.

My latest playlist follows my journey through progressive metal.  It’s not by any means meant to be a definitive list.  I’ve left out quite a few more popular bands and haven’t necessarily chosen the most iconic songs.  The list, however, showcases the bands that have had the most impact on my listening habits over the past two decades.  And to that effect, play it in order to follow my own progression!

Bring on the Craft Beer!

Can you believe that Citra hops were only officially released 12 years ago?  It’s simply incredible to think of the impact its release has had on the American craft beer market.

And speaking of Citra, Captain Lawrence’s ‘Citra Dreams’ features it in all of its glory.  A double dry hopping releases intense aromatics of tangerine, pineapple and resin.  With a smooth, medium body, Citra Dreams finishes on the drier side with a pleasant bitter finish reminiscent of grapefruit rind.  Approaching the Double IPA range at 7%, it packs a bit of a punch which makes it a pint to wind down with your favorite playlist.

My mass is anything be reduced after that meal, bu My mass is anything be reduced after that meal, but Ology’s 3.75% Mild Ale was the perfect complement to a gut busting meal.

Only celebrating with the wife this year, so we decided to put a different spin on the classics. Chinese Sausage Stuffing, Five Spice Carrots, Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Honey and Soy Sauce Glazed Turkey. Hands-down best turkey I’ve made to date. Stuffing wasn’t half bad either.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Still searching for some quality pies for Friday n Still searching for some quality pies for Friday nights. Bright side? My favorite frozen pizza from @screaminsicilian and a NEIPA from Arkane Aleworks.

Part of @gbbottleshop blind Florida IPA tasting, Sunny Side blends Rakau, Strata and Citra hops. Bursting with ripe, tropical fruits and touches of grapefruit, this is the juiciest can I’ve popped in the tasting so far.
Lots of questions running through my mind the past Lots of questions running through my mind the past couple of days. Didn’t think one of them would be how to best Lion King a beer, but these are strange times we’re living in and you gotta roll with the punches.

Hidden Spring’s ‘Ezra the Lion’ keeps it simple: Hazy IPA with Citra. Sticky tropical fruits and a touch of orange. Solid brew from one of my new favorites.

To top it off, proceeds from Ezra (named for Ezra Matthews who fought, but lost a battle neuroblastoma cancer) benefit the Beat Childhood Cancer Foundation. Fuck cancer. And seriously fuck childhood cancer.
